Proposed Audio Quick Start

Here are some notes on what we want to cover in the upcoming, official audio NVDA quick start tutorial. This is not meant to be the complete guide to using NVDA, but rather, it is meant to get users with a basic understanding of Windows up and running with NVDA as quickly as possible.

Intro

  • what is NVDA
  • speech and braille
  • comes as installer and portable editions
    • describe suitability for who and why
  • start NVDA with ctrl+alt+n
  • NVDA key
    • caps lock for laptop users
  • NVDA menu
    • brief mention of configuration, but not too complex here. Can configure items such as speech verbosity, voice, mouse tracking, keyboard, braille, etc.
  • mention automatic startup options for installed copies

Basics

  • should not need NVDA commands on a regular basis
  • start a document in notepad
  • cursoring around: character, line, word
  • read/spell current line: NVDA+up
  • continuous read: NVDA+down
  • stop/pause/resume with ctrl/shift

Switching between Applications, System Tray

  • alt+tab
  • task bar: Windows+t/Windows+tab
  • system tray: Windows+b
  • Remind listener that these are Windows key strokes, not screen reader key strokes.

Other Basic NVDA Commands

  • report current time: NVDA+f12
  • report focus: NVDA+tab
  • report foreground title: NVDA+t (probably want to be back in Notepad for this, not still in the taskBar).

Internet Explorer

  • demo with NVDA web site
  • progress beeps
  • read like a document
  • quick navigation: headings, form fields
  • elements list
  • table navigation
  • Flash
    • note that accessible Flash is rare
  • note that experience is the same with Firefox

Adobe Reader

  • demonstrate with NV Access marketing plan
  • experience is the same as in IE and Firefox

Windows Mail

  • navigate inbox
  • open and read message
  • compose and send message

Microsoft Word

  • demonstrate similarity to editing as before in Notepad
  • bold on word
    • briefly mention configuration for automatic reading of formatting info
  • spelling error

Microsoft Excel

  • navigate around spreadsheet
  • edit cells
  • add formula

Object Navigation and Review

  • brief introduction to object navigation
  • object text review commands (perhaps use static text in NVDA about dialog).
  • Demonstrate object navigation in Windows Explorer file/folder properties dialog.

Synthesiser Settings Ring

Mouse Tracking

  • text under the mouse (Move over a full notepad document and over start button / task bar)
  • mouse audio coordinates
