Currently, within A I M 6, 7, and later, you have to use NVDA's object navigation, to successfully traverse around the menus.
And although it does work to a fashion , its time consuming for most users.
Menus that do not work with this method include the change status menu, and the file transfer menu while in a message.

This has been reported to NVDA devs, however wasn't made in to an actual ticket.
Thus, I created this one!

Proud to say, that NVDA does work with the AIM buddy list, the message window when you are writing/voicing, and the option screen, (f7 key in main A I M screen,) works nicely as well while tabbing around.

Hi there,

Here's a small thing I found out with AIM 7, especially with the latest version of aim, v7.4:

If you press NVDA-B to read the entire dialog of the screen, NVDA will read what's in the AIM colors themes menu. For example, dark, pink, etc.
They have some strange names though.
I also noticed, when navigating the menus using object navigation, it doesn't let NVDA go to the exit option, which the hot key is alt-shift-f4.
And finally, NVDA does work nicely with the AIM system tray menu, without problems.
So for example, being able to access the settings window or being able to send an instant mesage that way.
Please let me know if any other details is worth mentioning.
As AOL 9.6 is now in beta finally, I'll take a look at it, and will make a separate ticket with my findings.

Failing that this works in AIM 9.6, we can check the z-order of the menu window and if its definitely the top window, then we should let focus events through.

Fixed in bdd399c, we no longer filter out focus events for a window that is at the very top of the z-order (its most likely a menu).

Greetings!

I just wanted to share the latest happenings with AIM. I haven't tried out AOL 9.7 yet, so I'll post a follow-up comment on the matter when I get around to looking at it.
The "New!" AIM, found at:
http://download.newaol.com/aim/win/AIM_Install.exe
, is not accessible with its main "GUI," which includes the "log-in" screen, as it simply says "unknown." Using the NVDA OCR Global Plugin, "did" display what it said on the log in screen, however trying to click on anything via the recognized text, resulted in "no reaction." All that "was" accessible via NVDA, was the "file" menu. There may have been possibly dialogs I may have missed, so please post a comment, if I have missed something.
The "What's New" for for the "New" AIM, can be found here:
http://www.aim.com/whatsnew

The "latest" version that is accessible, is v7.5.12.6, released on March 5, 2012. That one can be found here:
http://download.newaol.com/aim/win95/Install_AIM.exe

Just wanted to pass along the information above, in case someone is using AOL Instant Messenger currently.
