In Notepad, when using navigate by word command (either via focus via CTRL+left/right arrow or via review cursor using numpad 4/6), when Asian words (specifically, Korean words) are encountered, NVDA only reads the first character. To demonstrate this behavior, I'm attaching What's New in NvDA file written in Korean. This happens only in Notepad (as far as I'm concerned).

Can you please paste just one line of text that clearly shows the issue. For me if I view that file in notepad, and use a Vocalizer Korean voice, moving by word I hear all of each word.
Also give very clear instructions as to what word to move to and what should be spoken etc. I assume that in Korean spaces denote word boundaries like in English? I ask because in Chinese there arn't really any spaces between words.

Hi,
Returning to this ticket as I've seen other cases:
@mdcurran: here are some other cases provided by Korean users. To test them, paste the line iwth Korean characters into Notepad.
Korean: [실험]
Expected: announces both words.
Actual: In Notepad, only the first character is announced.
Korean: 2014년
Expected: NVDA announces both 2014 and the Korean character.
Actual: Only 2014 is announced when using Notepad.
After further testing, it appears that this is more prominent whenever a Korean word is proceeded by either an alphanumeric symbol or a punctuation mark.
Thanks.

Unfortunately, standard Edit fields (such as used in Notepad) don't allow us to ask for actual word offsets. From what we've seen, in most cases, they use the same rules as Uniscribe, which suggests they probably use Uniscribe internally. However, that doesn't seem to be true in these cases; the rules are different. To fix this, I guess we'd have to figure out some way to detect these edge cases and work out what we should return instead.

Hi:
It is the same in Chinese. So, I committed a ticket to solve this problem. There are two schemes on it. Ticket URL is #4075
Thanks!

@josephsl please try to test this also if possible, or maybe ask someone in the translations list to test if this has improved in last NVDA alpha. Thanks.

Hi.
I am part of the Korean translation team.
This issue is still reproducible in the alpha and stable version.
Thank you.

cc: @khsbory, @ungjinPark, @dnz3d4c how is this now in NVDA 2023.1 Beta or NVDA 2022.4? also cc: @larry801 it might also be relevant for chinese word navigation.
