Hello,
When loding a website in IE 9 Version 9.0.8112.16421 on my computer for the first time. While IE is loding NVDA will say Paine and unknown. And also NVDA will say unknown when returning to your desktop.
I think this is unneeded information.
Using Windows 7 64-Bit

Might I just point out that not only is this common on other versions of windows, but it can happen in other applications as well. Interestingly it also occurs in supernova at times and probably other screenreaders as well. My guess is that some events are sent to the screenreader as the app boots up and the reader just says what its supposed to, so if the screen is quite slow or the machine is slow, you might hear pane and unknown, on sN you tend to hear things like blank or stuff like that.

Often if an add on is being loaded at the start of the launch of IE for example, it will sign in as well, so it can be a good check of what is going on. If you do not want it, just tap control.
The more annoying thing for me is often the multiple reading of things that can occur when moving between windows in some applications. Its not always going to occur, but it can. I seem to recall nothing could be done about this.

Hi,
Yes I agree with you that I could just press CTRL.
It's more annoying than anything.
The most annoying thing that I've come across at the moment though is that when you lode a program with NVDA. NVDA will say taskbar. I know that MS made the taskbar come up before the program comes up in Windows 7 and Windows Vister. But it's really annoying when you have a program loded like IE and you want to swich to NVDA you have to press Windows M and then press Ault Tab to return to your program. I understand that menny of the big Screen Reader Program Company's scripd this to get past this problem.

I'm not sure what you mean. OK, NVDA does say taskbar when you open or exit out of an app, but that's because it gains focus. As soon as the app in question finishes loading the focus jumps to it. So I have no idea what are you refering to in your last paragraph.

Hi,
So if I opened IE. Before loding NVDA Then When IE starts NVDA will say Taskbar. And it doesn't say what program that you are in.
I no this is really hard because MS made the Taskbar come up first and not the program so if I had IE open and loded NVDA. NVDA will see Taskbar because that's how MS made Windows 7 and Windows Vister. But really NVDA should be reporting the program first and not the Taskbar. And the same when you go out of a program. NVDA should say desktop but NVDA says Taskbar. And a lot of big screen reader company's scripped there screen reader to get around this problem. Not that I'm saying that NVDA should do the same thing but it would be just nicer if NVDA could do this. It would make using NVDA just that little bit nicer. Note: This problem doesn't happen on Windows XP because in that Version of the OS. MS put the program and then the taskbar. :)

I'm not sure I follow what you mean, but if I understand correctly, this never happens to me (and shouldn't happen). NVDA does say Taskbar, but it then reads the app you opened once it finishes loading. This is a separate issue and needs a separate ticket if you want it investigated.

And the same when you go out of a program. NVDA should say desktop but NVDA says Taskbar.

In this case, the Desktop actually doesn't get focus (even for sighted users; try pressing your arrow keys), so it shouldn't say Desktop.

Hello,

Yes, these problems are still happening. Also NVDA says Paine when you lode Word 2010.

Actually, Both IE8 and Outlook Express in Win xp still occasionally spew out the stuff about English united kindom or parts of it. This seems to happen more often on slower machines. I'm wondering if its just Windows being annoying again and flagging things to the screenreader and then overwriting them almost straight away.

I can reproduce the issue of 'unknown' being reported when a program is launched reliably via the following STR with NVDA version 2017.2 and Windows 8.1:

  • Open the Start Menu.
  • Search for any program, let's say Microsoft Word, or Internet Explorer, or Teamtalk, all three of which I tested at my end. Once the program appears in the search results, press it.
Expected Result: NVDA should announce the program's window title when it launches.
Actual Result: Before anything is spoken, NVDA says 'unknown' once. After that one 'unknown', NVDA works as expected.

there are several issues about this. @FelixGruetzmacher reported recently an issue. @josephsl do you have any other suggestions? @LeonarddeR I think you were also involved in discussions dealing with this. Any thoughts?

@FelixGruetzmacher could you please test the last Alpha and see if it still occurs often?

I am closing this in favor of #8389 because this issue is very general and occurs in several situations regardless of the application. The discussion in that issue goes further and will continue there.
